Limitations of
Chromium OS

Restrictions

Restricting user apps/code and allowing web-only access for security, performance, management are the philosophy of Chromium OS.
Thus, it is not suitable for multi-purpose/applications like traditional OS.

Development

Users must modify & build the source code themselves since there is no official binary/deployment version of open-source Chromium OS.
Kernel modifications, feature additions, and license inspections require advanced development skills and time.

HW compatibility

Chromium OS is not well compatible with general PC HW.
Redeveloped versions of Chromium OS
have better compatibility but are still imperfect.
Thus, testing before deployment is required,
as the issues are mostly due to several GPUs,
wireless LAN cards, I/O devices.

FAQs

Which version can be used for commercial purposes?

You can copy, modify, and distribute both the source codes and binary files.
However, the Wayne OS USB version’s binary files cannot be used commercially because they include a patented feature (Improved Live USB).

What is the difference between modifying Wayne OS source code and binary file?

Technically, you can modify limited features of the binary file (e.g., the splash screen image and configuration file) if the binary file is built with the no-enable-rootfs-verification option.
If you want to modify more extensive features, such as the kernel or the admin password, you will need to work with the source code using the Chromium OS IDE/SDK.

How is Wayne OS distributed?

We are distributing it for free.
The annual download quantity is approximately 150K to 300K.
